I gave a reading in the library on Friday. I read the stories that were less convoluted and it is amazing how different the hearing of the word is to the seeing of the word. Of course that may not be amazing at all since the hearing is through the acoustic branch of the 8th cranial nerve to the temporal lobe and the seeing is through the mediation of the optic or 2nd cranial nerve to the occipital lobe. Not to say that they are not in cahoots, they hold hands through integrated pathways. Aren't we all amazing after all?

My father once said that a man with his hands in his pockets would never be hired by him. I'm sure however that he would not only hire, but buy the books of a man with one hand in his pocket and the other on a podium -- especially if he had read any of the works of J.D. Warren. This man, JDW, has such an astute observation of life that his readers find it difficult to put his books down - even when called to dinner. I, too, have published a couple of books like my brother, Jim. However, JDW is a fine writer. Next to him, I'm merely a story-teller.

My father retired as a counselling clinical psychologist and began growing and hybridizing asiatic and martagon lilies, a passion started as a young fellow in his 20s with 2 babies, a part-time job at the Beaver House Liquour store in downtown Edmonton and a busy life including work on his final graduate thesis for his PhD. He once told me that he finally had time after 50 years, to cultivate the flowers he so enjoyed. The exotic lilies, grown by a man in farming country, rather perplexed the farm families who lived nearby, earning him the moniker, "Lily Man" and the odd chide for being a guy growing "them erotic flowers"! I admire your diverse range of interests, Jim, and have enjoyed your writings immensely. My father, a southern Alberta boy, would have greatly enjoyed such a good read and such a kindred spirit.
